The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced full digital registration of births and deaths across all 16 local government areas of Kwara State, marking a major step towards expanding legal identity coverage and improving demographic data for national planning.
Speaking in Ilorin, the NPC Federal Commissioner for Kwara State, Dr. Yahaya Isiaka Alada, said the initiative, powered by the VitalReg platform under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system, became operational on July 1, 2026. He described it as a significant reform that would enhance service delivery, improve data accuracy and strengthen record security.
According to Alada, the digital platform offers faster registration, reduced paperwork, improved data validation, online access to services and digital certificate issuance where applicable. He noted that many births and deaths in the state still go unregistered, limiting access to legal identity and reliable data for government planning.
To boost coverage, the commission has established 92 registration centres across Kwara and is partnering with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to bring registration services closer to communities. Birth registration and notification services, he added, remain highly subsidised despite revised charges for some specialised administrative services.
The NPC called on parents, healthcare workers, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and the media to support the initiative by ensuring births and deaths are reported promptly, saying universal registration is key to effective governance and evidence-based development.
