The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated ₦2 billion to the Abia State Government to support the development of the renowned Akwete weaving industry, a centuries-old handwoven textile tradition indigenous to Akwete community in Ukwa East Local Government Area.
Speaking during a visit to Aba, the First Lady said the fund would help develop the Akwete production centre, create jobs, preserve the cultural heritage and strengthen the state’s economy. She described the fabric as a symbol of Nigeria’s rich cultural identity and urged younger generations to embrace and preserve the craft passed down through generations.
Tinubu also called on prominent sons and daughters of Igbo land to support efforts to promote Akwete fabric on the national stage. She pledged to wear an outfit made from the fabric at President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration if he secures a second term in 2027.
Governor Alex Otti welcomed the donation, saying it would significantly transform the Akwete weaving industry. He noted that the state had been working since 2023 to modernise production and improve the industry’s global competitiveness, while the Abia Council of Traditional Rulers honoured the First Lady with the title “Ugo Nwanyi Abia” in recognition of her support for women and cultural development.
