A fire suspected to have been triggered by an electrical surge has destroyed 17 shops at Sabo Market in Ikorodu, Lagos, in the early hours of Tuesday. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the blaze broke out around 1:10 a.m. and was brought under control through a joint operation with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
According to LASEMA, the fire started in one shop before spreading to adjoining stores, damaging 17 of the 32 shops in the affected section. Provisions, groceries, foodstuffs and other valuable goods were destroyed, but no deaths or injuries were recorded.
The agency said the swift response of emergency personnel prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the market and nearby buildings. Recovery operations have since been completed, with the response team returning to base after securing the area.
LASEMA urged traders and market leaders to prioritise electrical safety by ensuring proper wiring, avoiding overloaded electrical appliances and carrying out regular inspections of electrical installations. The agency also encouraged residents to report emergencies through the toll-free lines 112 and 767 for prompt response.
