Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inspected ongoing drainage and channel clearance projects along the Chevron–Victoria Garden City (VGC) corridor in Lekki, assuring residents that the government is implementing lasting measures to tackle flooding.
The governor toured key drainage routes from Okun-Ajah through Orchid Road, Sangotedo, Ogombo, Iwerekun and the Chevron-VGC Ajiran axis. He said investigations revealed that illegal developments had blocked natural waterways, worsening flooding after weeks of heavy rainfall. Excavators have begun clearing the affected channels and opening additional outlets to improve water flow into the lagoon.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the intervention would ease flooding in communities including Chevron, Orchid Road, Megamound Estate and Osapa London. He also announced plans to construct bridge crossings with large drainage culverts to ensure uninterrupted water flow while maintaining access to surrounding neighbourhoods.
The governor attributed the flooding to a combination of climate-related heavy rainfall and human activities such as illegal reclamation and indiscriminate waste disposal. He urged residents to stop dumping refuse into drainage channels and advised those in flood-prone areas to relocate temporarily when necessary, assuring them that the government would continue to strengthen flood-control infrastructure and provide timely weather advisories.
