Argentina booked their place in the FIFA World Cup final after a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in a thrilling semi-final at the Atlanta Stadium in the United States.
After a closely contested first half ended goalless, England took the lead in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon finished calmly from a Morgan Rogers assist. However, Argentina refused to give up and continued to press for an equaliser as both coaches made tactical substitutions.
The breakthrough came in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernández fired home from a Lionel Messi assist to level the score. Deep into stoppage time, substitute Lautaro Martínez completed the comeback, converting another brilliant pass from Messi to send Argentina into wild celebrations.
Messi finished with two assists in another influential performance as Argentina secured a memorable place in the World Cup final. England, who looked on course for victory after Gordon’s opener, must now shift focus to the third-place playoff after their late heartbreak.
