Democracy must deliver meaningful results for citizens if open societies are to remain strong and resilient, experts have said.
At the second Abuja Policy Lab organised by the German Embassy, policy experts, diplomats and civil society leaders warned that rising disinformation, political polarisation, insecurity and declining trust in institutions are putting democracies under increasing pressure worldwide.
Speakers stressed that governments must go beyond elections by improving public services, reducing poverty, strengthening accountability and ensuring citizens have a voice in governance. They also called for stronger institutions, electoral reforms, civic education and greater inclusion of women, youths and persons with disabilities in democratic processes.
The consensus from the event was clear: democracy survives not only through laws and institutions, but by improving people’s lives and maintaining public trust. Sustained dialogue, accountability and active citizen participation remain essential for building stronger and more open societies.
