China has upgraded its “Green Channel” policy to accelerate the clearance of African agricultural exports and improve access to one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
The initiative is designed to help African exporters overcome challenges associated with transporting fresh produce over long distances. Chinese officials say the upgraded process will reduce customs delays, protect product quality and make it easier for agricultural goods to reach consumers in China.
Speaking during a presentation on China-Africa cooperation in Beijing, officials revealed that China is also exploring broader market access arrangements for agricultural products such as citrus fruits, oranges and blueberries. The goal is to simplify trade procedures and increase export opportunities for African producers.
China says the policy forms part of wider efforts to strengthen agricultural cooperation with Africa through improved market access, potential zero-tariff measures, infrastructure development and investments that can boost value addition across the continent’s agricultural sector.
