REP AGBESE URGES TINUBU TO SUSPEND PROPOSED NYSC REFORMS

Listen

Rep. Philip Agbese has called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend the proposed reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), urging the Federal Government to subject the plans to a broader review involving key stakeholders before implementation.

The lawmaker, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency and serves as Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, said while modernising the scheme was necessary, the proposed changes should not undermine the NYSC’s core mandate of promoting national unity and integration. He warned against turning the scheme into what he described as merely a skills acquisition programme.

Agbese expressed concern over proposals that include restructuring orientation camp activities, introducing specialised career streams, replacing the traditional khaki uniform with locally made attire and appointing a civilian to head the scheme. He argued that the NYSC’s military orientation helps instill discipline, patriotism and national service among young graduates.

The lawmaker urged President Tinubu to establish an expanded review committee comprising security experts, lawmakers, former NYSC officials, youth groups and other stakeholders to carefully examine the proposed reforms.

Agbese noted that since its establishment in 1973, the NYSC has played a vital role in fostering national cohesion, promoting cultural integration and supporting critical sectors. He stressed that any far-reaching reforms should be implemented only after extensive consultation to safeguard the scheme’s long-term contribution to national development.
