NEUROLOGIST URGES NIGERIANS TO EMBRACE HEALTHY LIVING TO REDUCE STROKE RISK

A Consultant Neurologist, Dr. Adedunni Olusanya, has urged Nigerians to adopt healthier lifestyles and regularly monitor their blood pressure to reduce the growing burden of stroke, hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.

Speaking in an interview, the University of Lagos senior lecturer described uncontrolled high blood pressure as one of the leading causes of stroke and heart disease.

Olusanya said about 90 per cent of stroke cases are linked to preventable lifestyle factors such as excessive salt intake, obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, alcohol misuse, diabetes and high cholesterol. She advised Nigerians to eat more fruits, vegetables and legumes, reduce salt consumption, exercise regularly, manage stress and maintain a healthy weight.

The neurologist also stressed the importance of routine medical check-ups, warning that hypertension often develops silently without noticeable symptoms until serious complications occur. She added that early detection and proper management could significantly reduce the risk of stroke, disability and sudden death.

Olusanya called on governments and non-governmental organisations to intensify public awareness campaigns on blood pressure and healthy living, particularly in underserved communities, saying greater health education would help prevent avoidable deaths and improve the wellbeing of Nigerians.
