ART ENTHUSIASTS URGE GREATER INVESTMENT IN CREATIVE INDUSTRY TO BOOST NIGERIA’S ECONOMY

Listen

Art enthusiasts have called for increased investment in Nigeria’s creative industry, describing art as a powerful tool for storytelling, cultural preservation, job creation and economic growth.

Speaking during an Open Art Studio organised by social artist C.O. Kola-Lawal in Lagos, the stakeholders said the country’s rich creative talent could contribute significantly to tourism, exports and national development if given adequate support. They also stressed the need to make art more accessible to the public through exhibitions, festivals and community engagement.

According to the participants, Nigeria’s thriving creative sector—including painting, sculpture, photography, fashion, music, film and digital arts—offers enormous opportunities for employment and wealth creation. They noted that Nigerian artists continue to gain international recognition despite limited government support, while social media has expanded their reach to global audiences.

The enthusiasts also advocated stronger mentorship programmes to help young creatives monetise their talents and build sustainable careers. They urged governments, corporate organisations, schools and community leaders to collaborate in promoting art as both a cultural expression and a viable business venture.

Host of the event, C.O. Kola-Lawal, said greater appreciation and investment in the arts would help create a more balanced society. She noted that the Open Art Studio provides a platform for meaningful conversations around issues such as gender, environmental sustainability and social identity, while encouraging deeper public engagement with creative expression.
