President Bola Tinubu has challenged Team Nigeria to surpass the country’s best-ever performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, while urging the athletes to compete with integrity and strictly avoid doping.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, at a farewell ceremony in Abuja, the President reminded the contingent that they would be carrying the hopes of millions of Nigerians. He urged them to rely on talent, discipline and hard work, stressing that clean victories are more valuable than medals won through dishonest means.
Tinubu recalled Nigeria’s record haul of 35 medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and expressed confidence that the 74-member team would set a new national benchmark. He also commended the athletes, coaches, medical personnel, technical teams and sports administrators for their dedication, while praising the National Sports Commission and the Nigerian Olympic Committee for their early preparations.
The President said his administration had introduced reforms to improve sports funding, eliminate administrative bottlenecks and strengthen Nigeria’s anti-doping framework to ensure athletes compete under the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games begin in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2.
