FIBA WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS: D’TIGERS EDGE TUNISIA 84-81 IN FIZDALE’S WINNING DEBUT

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, opened their FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers campaign on a winning note, defeating Tunisia 84-81 in a closely contested Group C encounter in Luanda, Angola.

The victory also marked a successful competitive debut for newly appointed head coach, David Fizdale, whose side displayed resilience to overcome one of Africa’s basketball powerhouses.

D’Tigers took the first quarter 23-21 before Tunisia responded to edge the second quarter 23-20, leaving both teams level at halftime. Nigeria regained momentum after the break, winning the third quarter 21-19 and holding off a late challenge by claiming the final period 20-18 to secure the crucial victory.

The win significantly boosts Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar. D’Tigers will next face Guinea on Friday before taking on Rwanda on Sunday as they continue their quest for a place at the global tournament.
