The United States Mission in Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Nigeria as it celebrated America’s 250th Independence anniversary in Lagos. The event brought together top government officials, diplomats, traditional rulers, business leaders and other dignitaries at the U.S. Consul General’s Residence in Ikoyi.

Speaking at the celebration on Wednesday July 1, the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. Keith Heffern, described Nigeria as one of America’s most strategic partners in sub-Saharan Africa, revealing that two-way trade between both countries reached nearly 15.5 billion dollars in 2025. He said the U.S. would continue expanding cooperation through the five-year U.S.-Nigeria Commercial and Investment Partnership, with a focus on the digital economy, agriculture and infrastructure.

Heffern also highlighted ongoing collaboration in tackling transnational crime, improving maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and strengthening public health initiatives. He noted that growing cultural exchanges, particularly through music and Nigeria’s thriving entertainment industry, continue to deepen the long-standing friendship between both nations.

Earlier, the U.S. Consul General in Lagos, Mr. Rick Swart, who is retiring at the end of July, described his posting to Nigeria as the highlight of his diplomatic career. He praised Lagos for its innovation, resilience and hospitality, expressing confidence that the strong relationship between both countries would continue to flourish.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, congratulated the United States on the historic milestone, describing the Nigeria-U.S. relationship as one founded on shared values, innovation and mutual prosperity. He reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to fostering partnerships in trade, technology, education, healthcare and investment, while the colourful ceremony concluded with cultural performances and networking sessions celebrating the enduring friendship between both nations.
