The Kano State Government has launched the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme (PDSS), a new initiative designed to improve access to legal representation and strengthen the administration of criminal justice in the state.

Speaking at the scheme’s onboarding session in Kano, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru-Maude, described the programme as a major reform aimed at ensuring suspects receive legal assistance at the earliest stages of police investigations. The initiative is being implemented with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

According to the government, the scheme will help protect the constitutional rights of suspects, reduce unnecessary detention, support timely referrals for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, and contribute to the decongestion of custodial facilities. Officials say it will also promote compliance with criminal justice laws and strengthen cooperation among justice sector institutions.

The pilot phase of the programme will involve 10 Police Duty Solicitors working alongside key stakeholders in the justice system. Authorities say the initiative is expected to enhance transparency, accountability and public confidence in the delivery of justice across Kano State.
