REDAN URGES WIKE TO PROTECT ABUJA’S GREEN SPACES AMID URBAN EXPANSION

Listen

The Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) has called on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to ensure that any review of the Abuja Master Plan preserves designated parks and green areas.

Speaking in Abuja, REDAN President, Oba Akintoye Adeoye, said Abuja can accommodate its growing population without sacrificing vital environmental assets. He suggested redeveloping low-density neighbourhoods into high-rise residential buildings as a sustainable alternative to converting parks and green spaces for development.

Adeoye noted that many cities around the world have successfully expanded through urban redevelopment while protecting their environmental heritage. He stressed that parks are critical to the city’s ecosystem and should be treated as legacy infrastructure that must be preserved for future generations.

While acknowledging that master plans are designed to evolve with changing realities, he urged authorities to focus on opening up new areas through investments in roads, electricity, water supply and transportation infrastructure rather than encroaching on green zones. According to him, sustainable growth and environmental protection must go hand in hand as Abuja continues to develop.
