SAVE THE CHILDREN: 161 MILLION NIGERIANS STILL LACK ACCESS TO SAFE WATER

Listen

Access to safe water remains a major challenge in Nigeria, with Save the Children International (SCI) warning that more than 161 million Nigerians do not have access to safe water.

Marking the 2026 Day of the African Child, SCI said inadequate access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services continues to affect the health, education and wellbeing of millions of children across the country. The organisation noted that many children remain vulnerable to preventable diseases linked to poor sanitation and unsafe water sources.

SCI called for stronger action from governments, development partners, communities and the private sector to improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities. The organisation stressed that safe water, sanitation and hygiene are fundamental rights that every child deserves.

The 2026 Day of the African Child is themed: “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa.”
