Argentina kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in impressive fashion with a 3-0 victory over Algeria in a Group J clash played in Kansas City, United States.
Lionel Messi starred for the defending champions, scoring all three goals to register the tournament’s first hat-trick. The Argentine captain opened the scoring in the 17th minute before adding two more goals in the second half to seal a commanding win.
Argentina controlled much of the match, enjoying the majority of possession and creating several chances, while Algeria struggled to break down a disciplined Argentine defence. The result gives Argentina three valuable points and a strong start in Group J.
The match also marked another milestone for Messi, who became the first player to feature in six FIFA World Cup tournaments. Argentina will now look to build on the victory in their next group fixture.
