SENATE ADVANCES BILL TO EXPAND COURT OF APPEAL JUDGES FROM 70 TO 110

Listen

The Senate has passed for second reading a bill seeking to amend the Court of Appeal Act to increase the number of Justices from 70 to 110.

The proposed amendment was presented during plenary by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who said the move is aimed at strengthening the justice system and improving access to appellate courts across Nigeria.

According to him, the growing number of cases—driven by population growth, economic activity, electoral disputes, and commercial litigation—has placed heavy pressure on the Court of Appeal. He noted that the bill also includes provisions to modernise court operations and introduce virtual hearing systems.

After debate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the bill to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further review.
