The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has described misinformation and hostile propaganda as growing security threats, stressing the need for stronger collaboration between the military and the media.
Speaking at the Directorate of Army Public Relations Combined First and Second Quarters Media Workshop 2026 in Abuja, the Army Chief said modern adversaries increasingly use disinformation and psychological operations to weaken public confidence and undermine security efforts. He noted that effective media engagement has become an important tool in supporting national security operations.
Shaibu said accurate information and responsible reporting are critical to countering false narratives, strengthening public trust, and promoting cooperation between citizens and security agencies. He also urged media professionals to highlight the sacrifices and professionalism of troops serving across various operational theatres.
The workshop brought together military spokespersons, media executives, defence correspondents, communication experts, and other stakeholders to discuss strategies for addressing misinformation and enhancing strategic communication in support of national security.
