Residents in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) say they are increasingly funding community security measures, including installing street gates and hiring private vigilantes, in response to security concerns in their neighbourhoods.
Some residents say that the measures were introduced after incidents of robbery, theft and other suspicious activities. They said relevant authorities were engaged and site assessments carried out before the gates were installed.
According to residents, access to some streets remains open during the day, while movement is monitored at night by security personnel. In some communities, homeowners contribute funds to support security operations, including the engagement of local vigilantes.
While many residents see the measures as necessary, others have raised concerns about restrictions on roads traditionally considered public. The development highlights a growing trend of communities taking additional steps to improve local security.
