Farmers across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) say the 2026 planting season has started with both hope and concern. While early rainfall has encouraged cultivation, many farmers say soaring costs of fertilisers, seeds, agrochemicals and labour are making farming increasingly difficult.
Some farmers told the press that fertiliser prices have risen sharply compared to last year, forcing them to reduce the size of land under cultivation. Others cited erosion, unpredictable rainfall patterns and insecurity as additional challenges affecting farming activities.
Despite the difficulties, many remain optimistic about the season. They are calling for government support through input subsidies, improved access to credit facilities, modern farming equipment and climate-smart agricultural practices to boost food production.
Farmers say Nigeria can achieve higher food output this season if challenges related to production costs, weather conditions and security are effectively addressed.
