PLANTING SEASON: FARMERS HOPEFUL OVER RAINS, WORRIED BY RISING INPUT COSTS

Listen

Farmers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and surrounding communities have expressed mixed feelings as the 2026 planting season gets underway.

While many farmers say the early rains have created favourable conditions for cultivation, they are concerned about the rising costs of fertilisers, seeds, agrochemicals and labour. Some farmers say the increasing expenses have forced them to reduce the size of land they planned to cultivate this season.

Others noted that although rainfall has supported planting activities, challenges such as erosion, unpredictable weather patterns and insecurity continue to affect farming operations. Several farmers called for government support through input subsidies, improved access to credit and timely distribution of farm supplies.

Despite the challenges, farmers remain optimistic that with favourable weather conditions and adequate support, agricultural production can improve and help boost food availability across the country.
