LAGOS CAN’T MEET GROWING COCONUT DEMAND, SAYS FORMER LASCODA BOSS

Listen

Coconut demand in Lagos is growing faster than local production, according to former Lagos State Coconut Development Authority (LASCODA) Managing Director, Dapo Olakulehin.

Speaking in Lagos, Olakulehin said increased awareness of the health benefits of coconut products has boosted consumption and processing activities across Nigeria. He noted that although Lagos now produces about 290,000 metric tonnes of coconuts, supply still falls short of demand.

According to him, many processors still depend on imports from countries like Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire to sustain production. He added that coconut processing has expanded beyond oil production to include products such as coconut flour and other health-related derivatives.

Olakulehin also said the Lagos State Government is making efforts to reposition the coconut sector to meet rising market demand and emerging opportunities in the industry.
