The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) says Nigeria’s sugar sector has the potential to generate about one million jobs if fully developed.
The Executive Secretary/CEO of NSDC, Mr Kamar Bakrin, made this known during a strategic meeting with the Nigeria Customs Service in Abuja. He said the sector could create both direct and indirect jobs, especially in rural communities across several states.
According to him, Nigeria currently spends over one billion dollars annually on sugar imports, adding that local production could redirect this spending into jobs, industrial growth and national development.
Bakrin also noted that modern sugar estates could generate electricity for the national grid, while stressing the need for stronger collaboration with Customs in areas such as regulation and anti-smuggling efforts.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, expressed support for the initiative, saying it aligns with Nigeria’s broader goals of job creation and economic diversification.
