FG PUSHES RANCHING, MODERN LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION TO REFORM SECTOR

Listen

The Federal Government has called on pastoralists across Nigeria to embrace ranching and modern livestock production as part of efforts to reform the livestock sector.

The Minister of Livestock Development said open grazing is becoming increasingly difficult due to population growth, climate change and expansion of farming activities. He added that sedentary livestock production would improve pasture development, animal health and productivity.

The minister also disclosed plans to develop 417 grazing reserves nationwide, with support for veterinary services, water supply and modern livestock management systems.

Pastoralist leaders at the meeting also called for improved grazing facilities, youth employment opportunities and stronger collaboration with security agencies to support peacebuilding and conflict prevention.
