Civil society organisations in Akwa Ibom have called for the unbundling of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to improve efficiency and strengthen benefits for oil-producing host communities.
The groups made the call in a communique issued after a two-day advocacy workshop for traditional rulers on impact assessments in oil-producing regions.
The organisations also urged a review of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to allow greater representation of women, youths and persons with disabilities in Host Community Development Trusts.
They further called for stronger transparency, accountability and enforcement of environmental protection measures in the oil and gas sector.
