NIGERIA SPENT OVER $9BN ON LIBERIA, SIERRA LEONE PEACE MISSIONS — DEFENCE ADVISER

Listen

Nigeria’s Defence Adviser to the United Nations, Brig.-Gen. Edward Koleoso, says Nigeria spent more than $9 billion supporting peacekeeping and liberation efforts in Liberia and Sierra Leone during their civil wars.

Speaking during a visit by participants of the United States Army War College to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, Koleoso said Nigeria also lost military personnel and equipment during the operations.

According to him, Nigeria never demanded compensation for the missions, describing the intervention as part of the country’s commitment to international peace and regional stability.

Koleoso also said Nigeria has contributed over 200,000 peacekeepers to 41 UN peacekeeping missions across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East since independence.
