The Defence Headquarters says recent airstrikes carried out in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State were targeted strictly at armed bandits and not civilians.
According to the military, the operation followed intelligence reports about the movement and gathering of armed groups in parts of the area. The strikes reportedly targeted locations in Katerma, Bokko, Kusasu and Kuduru villages between late May 9 and early May 10.
The DHQ said post-strike intelligence showed the operation achieved its objectives, while also dismissing reports claiming civilians were affected. It added that residents in the affected communities had earlier moved to safer locations before the operation began.
However, the military said relevant formations have still been directed to verify any allegations of civilian casualties. Authorities also urged the public and media to avoid spreading unverified information as security operations continue.
