Katsina — Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) is calling on the Federal Government to hike tobacco taxes, arguing that low prices are fuelling widespread smoking—especially among youths and low-income groups.
Executive Director Auwal Rafsanjani said higher taxes would push up prices and cut consumption, describing taxation as one of the most effective tools to curb tobacco use.
The group also raised concerns over poor enforcement of anti-smoking laws, noting that public smoking still persists despite regulations.
CISLAC warned that tobacco—ranging from cigarettes to shisha and e-cigarettes—poses serious health and economic risks, including cancer and reduced productivity.
