UN Secretary-General António Guterres is calling for urgent global investment in disaster resilience as a way to honour victims of earthquakes.
Marking the International Day in Memory of Earthquake Victims, Guterres stressed that while earthquakes strike without warning, their impact can be reduced with the right planning and preparation.
He highlighted measures like stronger building codes, regular safety drills, and smarter urban planning as key to protecting lives and communities.
The UN chief also pointed to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction as a guide for countries to strengthen prevention, preparedness, and recovery efforts.
According to him, global cooperation is crucial—not just in responding to disasters, but in building safer cities before tragedy strikes.
His message is clear: with the right investment and foresight, communities can withstand even the toughest shocks.
