Poultry farmers in Lagos are raising alarm over lack of financing, warning it’s crippling their ability to expand production.
Farmers say stocking birds now costs millions, with one producer revealing she spent nearly ₦2 million just to fill her pens — a cost many can’t sustain, leaving some pens empty.
To cope, many now raise day-old chicks themselves, but even that’s getting tougher as chick prices and feed costs keep rising, squeezing profits.
Industry voices, including members of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, also blame cheap imported frozen chicken for hurting local demand, forcing farmers to scale down production.
They’re now calling on government to boost funding, support local hatcheries, and reduce feed costs to revive the sector.
Without urgent support, farmers warn local poultry production could keep declining.
