FOOD SECURITY PUSH: FG AGENCY URGES FARMERS TO EMBRACE GM CROPS

Listen

The Director-General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, is urging farmers to adopt genetically modified (GM) technology to boost food production and income.

Speaking at a sensitisation event in Kano, Mustapha said GM crops are safe, well-tested, and designed to increase yield while reducing reliance on harmful pesticides.

He explained that before approval, all GM crops go through strict checks by the National Biosafety Management Agency to ensure they are safe for humans and the environment.

According to him, the goal isn’t to replace farmers’ knowledge but to support it with innovation—helping farmers grow more, earn more, and strengthen food security.

Stakeholders, including the Seed Association of Nigeria, also backed the move, urging farmers to ignore misinformation and embrace modern agricultural science.
