FG LINKS DRIVER EDUCATION TO ECONOMY, SECURITY AS REFORMS INTENSIFY

Listen

The Federal Government has again stressed that effective driver education is crucial to strengthening Nigeria’s economy, improving road safety, and supporting internal security.

This was the message from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike at a national workshop organised by the Federal Road Safety Corps in Abuja for driving school operators and instructors.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the FCT Transport Secretariat, Mrs Florence Nonubari, Wike said road crashes are not just a transport issue but a major economic and social burden—leading to loss of lives, reduced productivity, and pressure on families.

He warned that poorly regulated driving schools and weak training systems are fueling unsafe driving habits, urging stronger standards and stricter compliance.

According to him, driving schools sit at the heart of road safety because they shape driver behaviour from the beginning. “Proper training produces responsible drivers who obey traffic rules and protect lives,” he noted.

He also emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility, calling for closer collaboration between government agencies, private operators, and the public to reduce accidents nationwide.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, reinforced the message, saying modern driver education must focus on competence, discipline, and safety awareness—not just vehicle handling.

He added that driving schools also play a role in economic growth through job creation and skills development, but must operate professionally to deliver quality training.

Both leaders urged participants to adopt innovative training methods and global best practices to improve outcomes and reduce road traffic fatalities.
