A glamorous political dinner turned into panic in Washington after gunshots outside the White House Correspondents’ event forced a rush evacuation of President Trump and top officials.
U.S. officials say President Donald Trump was likely the target of a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner venue in Washington on Saturday night.
Authorities say a suspect opened fire on a Secret Service agent outside the Washington Hilton before being arrested. Trump and First Lady Melania were quickly evacuated as panic spread inside the packed ballroom.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said investigations suggest the attacker may have targeted administration officials, including the president. The suspect is expected to face federal charges.
The Secret Service confirmed the injured officer survived thanks to a bulletproof vest. Officials are now probing how the gunman managed to get weapons into the venue.
The event was cancelled after guests, including cabinet members, took cover under tables as security agents moved in.
Investigations are ongoing.
