STAKEHOLDERS CALL FOR RETURN OF COVID-19 SAFETY RULES AS COMPLACENCY GROWS

Listen

Health stakeholders are urging Nigerians to revive COVID-19 safety practices in schools, workplaces, and public spaces amid signs of growing complacency and rising concern over new infections.

The call follows a reported case confirmed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Cross River State, sparking fears of a possible resurgence.

Across many communities, once-strict measures like hand-washing stations, sanitiser use, mask-wearing, and social distancing have largely disappeared. Schools, hospitals, and offices are now operating with little visible adherence to the old protocols.

Some residents say enforcement has faded, while others point to rising living costs as a reason families no longer prioritise hygiene products.

Health experts, however, warn that basic practices like hand-washing and sanitiser use still play a key role in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory infections—especially in crowded areas like schools and markets.

They are calling on authorities to reintroduce awareness campaigns and ensure hygiene facilities are available in public institutions.
