GLOBAL HUNGER SET TO WORSEN IN 2026 — REPORT WARNS

Listen

A new global report says food insecurity will remain at critical levels in 2026, driven by conflict, drought, and declining humanitarian aid.

In 2025 alone, about 266 million people across 47 countries faced acute hunger, with 1.4 million in catastrophic conditions in places like Sudan, Gaza, and Haiti. Hunger has now doubled over the past decade.

Children remain the most vulnerable—over 35 million were acutely malnourished last year.

Experts warn the crisis is no longer temporary, as persistent conflicts and economic pressures continue to strain food systems. Fresh tensions in the Middle East could also push up food and fertiliser prices globally.

In West Africa, Nigeria is expected to see one of the sharpest spikes, with an additional 4.1 million people projected to face hunger in 2026.

To make matters worse, funding is shrinking—food aid dropped by nearly 40% in 2025, with further cuts expected.
