EU SET TO TIGHTEN SCREWS ON RUSSIA AFTER ORBÁN EXIT

Listen

The European Union is gearing up for a tougher round of sanctions against Russia, following the electoral defeat of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán—long seen as a roadblock to stricter measures.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas says the bloc is ready to finalise its 21st sanctions package, targeting Russia’s economy more aggressively especially oil, gas, and financial systems.

For years, Orbán’s resistance slowed down sanctions, but with his veto now gone, previously “untouchable” measures are back on the table. That could include going after more Russian oligarchs and even religious figures backing the Ukraine war.

The EU already pushed through its 20th sanctions package after Orbán lifted his veto days after losing elections—marking the end of his 16-year rule.
