END MALARIA NOW! EXPERT URGES STATES TO SHOW REAL COMMITMENT

Listen

A leading malaria expert, Wellington Oyibo, is calling on state governments to step up efforts and show stronger political commitment to eliminate malaria across Nigeria.

Speaking to mark World Malaria Day 2026, Oyibo said progress in states like Lagos State—where malaria prevalence is now around 5%—proves that elimination is possible with the right leadership and funding.

He noted that other states like Anambra State and Delta State are also recording encouraging low figures, urging others to follow suit.

According to him, malaria remains a major threat, especially to children and pregnant women, despite being preventable and treatable.

He stressed simple steps like using treated mosquito nets, keeping environments clean, and testing before treatment—not self-medicating.

Oyibo warned that ending malaria requires collective action, sustained funding, and full commitment—not partial efforts.
