Two of Africa’s leading naval forces are teaming up to tackle piracy and strengthen security at sea.

The Nigerian Navy and South African Navy have concluded their maiden Naval Staff Talks, aimed at deepening cooperation and enhancing maritime security across the continent.

The talks, held from April 12 to 18 at Naval Base Simon’s Town in Cape Town, brought together senior officials from both navies to map out strategies for joint operations and long-term collaboration.

Discussions focused on key areas including maritime awareness, joint training, capacity development, and coordinated responses to threats like piracy, illegal fishing, and transnational crime.

The Nigerian delegation was led by Rear Adm. Auwal Mustapha, while Rear Adm. Siyabonga Makhanya headed the South African team.

Officials say the engagement is expected to strengthen joint efforts in securing African waters and protecting maritime resources.

The South African Navy is also set to participate in the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary celebrations in June, further cementing the growing partnership.
