From fixing jets to building rockets — the Nigerian Air Force is betting big on local innovation to fly smarter and stronger.
Kaduna, April 17, 2026 — The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has doubled down on innovation, launching its 2026 Intra-Command Research and Development (R&D) Competition to boost efficiency and drive self-reliance.
Speaking at the event, AVM Muhammad Ibrahim said the initiative is key to building a culture of innovation amid evolving security threats and fast-changing technology.
He noted that past R&D efforts have already produced homegrown solutions, including helicopter components, jet heat shields and locally made rocket systems now used in operations.
The competition, themed “Optimising Emerging Technologies for Enhancing Air Operations,” is also a build-up to the 2026 NAF Day exhibition.
Air Officer Commanding ATC, AVM Esen Efanga, described the contest as a practical platform for solving real operational challenges, especially in aircraft maintenance and adaptability.
At the end of the showcase, the 433 Engineering Group, Kainji, clinched top spot with an upgraded Alpha Jet system, followed by teams from Enugu and Kaduna.
NAF says the goal is clear: innovate locally, reduce dependence, and stay mission-ready.
