FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF KASHERE (FUK) Vice-Chancellor warns against fake news, hate speech, urges digital responsibility
Young Nigerians must become digitally conscious and media-literate to avoid turning their devices into tools of harm, Prof. Umar Pate, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Kashere, has said.
Speaking at the 29th and 30th combined convocation of Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Pate warned that fake news, hate speech and sensational content were fueling conflict and violence across the country.
“Don’t be controlled by your devices—use them positively,” he said, noting that while digital tools can inform and connect, they can also be addictive, disruptive and divisive if abused.
Pate stressed that peaceful coexistence in Nigeria must be intentional, driven by responsible communication, ethical leadership and everyday choices. He urged journalists and communicators to practice conflict-sensitive reporting, fact-check rigorously and amplify voices promoting peace rather than violence.
