After talks at Government House, traders back upgrade plan aimed at order, safety and global standards
Anambra State Government has reached a deal with traders to kick off a phased remodelling of the Onitsha Main Market, paving the way for better infrastructure, order and sustainability.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo announced the agreement after a dialogue with market leaders and traders in Awka, saying work will begin immediately but in phases to reduce disruption to business.
According to the governor, the intervention will include reclaiming market parks, restoring walkways, building public toilets, repainting and colour-coding shops, and reorganising trading lines. He stressed that while some decisions may be inconvenient, they are necessary to reposition the market to global standards.
On behalf of traders, Onitsha Main Market Chairman, Chijioke Okpalugo, confirmed their support for the remodelling plan, while requesting a short window for traders to relocate goods from areas affected by illegal structures.
