RONALDO RETIRES FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL AFTER 23-YEAR PORTUGAL CAREER

Listen

Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly announced his retirement from international football, bringing an illustrious 23-year career with the national team to an end. The 41-year-old Al Nassr forward leaves as Portugal’s all-time leading scorer, with 146 goals in 234 appearances.

Ronaldo, who made his international debut in 2003, represented Portugal at 12 major tournaments, including six FIFA World Cups and six European Championships. His achievements with the national team include the 2016 UEFA European Championship and UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. Announcing his decision on social media on Thursday, November 5, 2026, he said, “Portugal will always be in me.”

In his retirement statement, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner described representing Portugal as the greatest honour of his career. “Today I finish my journey on the pitch with the national team. I leave with my head held high, proud of the path I have taken, and knowing that I gave everything I had for Portugal,” he said, thanking teammates, coaches, family, officials and supporters for their contributions.

Ronaldo’s reported retirement follows a period of tension with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus over playing time during the previous international break. Reports said the disagreement escalated after Ronaldo was not brought on during a 2-1 win over Norway, despite warming up. He reportedly left the national team camp ahead of the match against Denmark, later apologised to teammates and supporters, and was said to have received a 30-day suspension and a £215 fine from the Portuguese Football Federation.

The federation expressed gratitude for Ronaldo’s contribution, describing him as an inspiring leader and a symbol of the national team’s spirit. With a record 234 caps and 146 goals, Ronaldo leaves behind a legacy of achievements, leadership and landmark moments in Portuguese football.
