The Federal Fire Service (FFS), FCT Command, has cautioned students in Abuja against unsafe fire practices, urging them to adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of fire incidents at school and at home.

The command carried out a fire safety sensitisation exercise on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at Government Secondary School (GSS), Kubwa, as part of activities marking the 2026 National Fire Service Week. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Barnabas Anyam, said the engagement was aimed at building fire safety awareness among students and school staff from an early age.

Anyam highlighted common causes of fire and warned against careless handling of fire-related materials. He advised students not to play with matches, lighters or gas cookers without adult supervision, and urged them to place candles on appropriate stands and handle them carefully. He also demonstrated the “Stop, Drop and Roll” technique for use when clothing catches fire.

The students were educated on reporting suspected fires promptly and evacuating classrooms immediately during an emergency. Firefighters also demonstrated how to use fire extinguishers and fire blankets, giving students an opportunity to operate the equipment and extinguish a controlled fire.

Speaking on behalf of the school’s principal, the Head of Clubs and Societies, Mrs Idowu Opeyemi, described the campaign as an important opportunity to equip students with life-saving knowledge. She said the school’s Fire and Safety Club also promoted fire prevention, while student Chinonso Okeke praised the exercise for providing practical skills on using fire extinguishers and responding to emergencies.
