Nigeria’s Flamingos have advanced to the semi-finals of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Venezuela on Sunday night.
The decisive moment came in the 89th minute when Azeezatt Oduntan converted a penalty to hand Nigeria the victory in a closely contested quarter-final encounter.
Both teams defended resolutely throughout the match, with Venezuela’s goalkeeper producing several outstanding saves to keep the game goalless. However, Oluebube Umejiaku won a penalty in the 88th minute, which was confirmed after a VAR review.
Oduntan stepped forward to convert the spot kick, sending the Nigerian team into the last four of the competition.
The Flamingos will now face Brazil in the semi-finals after the South American side defeated China 2-1 in their quarter-final fixture.
