CAN RAISES CONCERN OVER REPORTED CONVICTION OF CHRISTIAN WOMAN IN BORNO

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed concern over the reported conviction and imprisonment of a Christian woman, identified as Lami Dawa, in Borno State, calling on relevant authorities to ensure that her fundamental rights are protected.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, October 31, in Abuja, saying the association was particularly concerned by reports that the case arose from circumstances involving the conversion of an adult woman to Christianity.

Okoh, however, noted that the precise facts and legal basis of the conviction were still being verified. He confirmed that an appeal had been filed and said CAN was committed to allowing the judicial process to run its course.

He stressed that the case raised important questions about religious freedom and the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution. He maintained that every individual had the right to freely choose, change or practise their religion without coercion, intimidation or unlawful punishment.

The CAN president urged relevant authorities to protect the rights of all parties and ensure that justice was served in accordance with the Constitution and the law. He added that the association would continue to monitor developments and engage relevant authorities through appropriate legal and institutional channels.

Okoh reaffirmed CAN’s commitment to peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of different religious backgrounds and the protection of every citizen’s fundamental rights and freedoms.
