An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan has sentenced a 38-year-old man, Vincent Akerah, to two months of community service for unlawfully possessing Cannabis Sativa.

Akerah was arraigned by the police on October 22 on a two-count charge of conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace and unlawful possession of Cannabis Sativa. He pleaded guilty to the charges.

Delivering judgment on Friday, October 30, Magistrate Adebola Adeola convicted him and ordered him to perform community service at the Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily for two months, effective immediately. The magistrate described him as remorseful and cautioned him against repeating the offences.

Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Femi Omilana, told the court that Akerah committed the offences at about 6:30 a.m. on October 20 in the Apata area of Ibadan. He said the convict was allegedly selling and smoking cannabis when he was apprehended with 28 wraps of the substance. The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 249(d) and 430 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
