A 35-year-old Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) officer, Sesan Adediji, has died after being hit by a vehicle during a routine traffic inspection along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School in Akure, Ondo State. The police have arrested the driver and commenced an investigation into the incident.
The Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday, October 9, saying it occurred at about 9:30 a.m. Preliminary information indicated that the vehicle involved was a white Mitsubishi van with registration number AGL 992 XX, driven by 37-year-old Ayoade Idowu of Gbogi Street, Akure.
According to the police, Adediji was on patrol with his team when he flagged down the vehicle to inspect its documents. The driver reportedly stopped but allegedly drove off when asked to produce the relevant papers, hitting the officer in the process. Adediji sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.
The police said the deceased’s remains had been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the driver remained in custody. Investigations are ongoing, and the case is expected to be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further inquiry.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Felix Ohagwu, expressed condolences to the family, colleagues and associates of the deceased, assuring the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted and appropriate legal action taken. The command also urged motorists to obey lawful traffic instructions and cooperate with authorised enforcement officers to protect lives and ensure road safety.
