NNPC: FUEL DISCOUNT IS TEMPORARY RELIEF, NOT RETURN OF SUBSIDY

Listen

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has clarified that its fuel discount programme is a temporary customer relief measure and does not represent a return to petroleum subsidy, following concerns over rising fuel prices.

In a statement issued on Friday, October 9, by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, the company said the initiative was introduced on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. The discount will run until October 31, 2026, across NNPC retail stations nationwide to help ease the financial pressure on households and businesses amid elevated global crude oil prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

NNPC said the initiative aligns with efforts by the Federal Government to cushion the effects of rising fuel costs. The company referenced the October 8 statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on measures to provide relief to Nigerians amid rising global crude oil prices.

The company stressed that the discount applies only at its retail outlets and does not establish a uniform national pump price or alter the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products. It described the measure as a temporary intervention designed to support customers during global market uncertainty while maintaining commercially responsible operations.

NNPC urged Nigerians to disregard claims that the initiative signals a return to fuel subsidy, reiterating that the programme is strictly a customer relief measure and not a change in the country’s petroleum pricing policy.
