NIGERIA ARMY TO SUPPORT HOSTING OF INAUGURAL AFRICAN INDOOR ARCHERY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Nigerian Army has begun plans to support Nigeria’s hosting of the inaugural African Indoor Archery Championship at its Corps of Artillery facility, as part of efforts to promote sports development and strengthen the country’s capacity to host continental competitions.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, disclosed this on Thursday,October 8, while receiving a delegation from World Archery Africa and the Nigeria Archery Federation (NAFED) at Army Headquarters in Abuja. According to a statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, Shaibu directed the Chief of Training to commence planning for the proposed championship.

Shaibu described archery as a sport that promotes focus, marksmanship and discipline, adding that the partnership would strengthen civil-military relations, improve physical readiness and technical capacity, and promote Nigeria’s reputation through sporting excellence.

NAFED President, Mohammed Baba Abdullahi, commended the Army for constructing what he described as Africa’s first dedicated standard archery pitch within a military formation. He added that Nigerian military archers recently won all the country’s medals at the African Championship. World Archery Africa President, Mr Amine, also praised the Army’s support and facilities, urging it to back Nigeria’s bid to host the continental indoor competition.
